Mom said "night walk" and I already knew it was going to be a good one. She only says it in that voice when we're going to the big grass by the water. The one with the tall trees and the lights way across on the other side.
We got there and I smelled Watson before I saw him. Wet fur and grass and something like a tennis ball that had been chewed a lot. He was doing his big loud pant, tongue all the way out, tail going. Watson doesn't do anything small. He flopped down right in front of me like we hadn't just seen each other last time. Like it was brand new every time. I like that about him.

Stevie was there too, running around a little kid who was rolling in the grass with an orange stick toy. Stevie doesn't walk anywhere. Stevie only runs. Little legs, big opinions.
I was doing my tongue-out thing, head tipped back, just breathing it all in. The grass. The mud from earlier rain. Somebody's leftover hot dog smell drifting from somewhere I couldn't find. I laid down right next to my orange and blue ball, the one that matches Lola's, and just watched everybody.
Then Mom pointed up. I don't usually look up. But she kept saying
